There are lots of ways to get involved with volunteering at 21 Together. All our volunteers are part of an amazing team and can access great training opportunities. For those looking to forward their careers, it can provide excellent experience for CV’s and give you a real insight into working with children with SEN. We offer the chance to work in a service which is supervised and clinically run by Symbol UK LTD, they are the national experts in speech and language therapy for children with Down’s syndrome. Their experience goes far and beyond speech therapy, they work with children and adults to build life skills, social skills and work skills. An opportunity not to missed. All our volunteers are required to undergo an enhanced DBS check and we ask for one professional reference. The different volunteer roles are outlined below.

Saturday Helper

Our Saturday Helper is responsible for letting families in and out of the building, being in the waiting area to talk to families and being on standby to help out in the groups when needed. You will also act as a ‘middle man’ between the groups and the parents to give the therapy staff time to prepare for the next groups. If you were doing a regular slot we may also ask you to provide some support for parents and sign post other services (you would get training for this). This role can be taken on a regular or a rota basis. If you could spare one Saturday a month or even every six weeks that could really help us.

Holiday Camp Helper

This role is working directly with the children and young people through our holiday speech camps. This would be supporting young people over three consecutive days whilst building communication and life skills. The groups are a lot of fun and we have a real range of children and young people attending. Some will need 1:1 support whilst others will be working in larger groups. Some will be working on small step goals around behaviour and being able to participate in groups, whilst others are working on high level social and life skills. Either way it is an immensely rewarding role where you are directly supervised by Symbol trained therapists as well as our own co-workers. These groups move around Kent so some may be in your area and some require travel. The charity are able to cover your travel costs if needed. This role is particularly suited to those who have experience working with children and /or studying relevant subjects such as SEN studies or speech and language therapy.

Our next camp is:

DATE: 28th -30th August 2019

TIME: Morning session- 09:00 -13:30, afternoon session 11:30 – 16:30. You can choose either mornings or afternoon or both, but we do ask people to commit to attending the same session for all three days + the training session. This is vital for our children/young people

VENUE: Thanington Neighbourhood Resource Centre, Thanington Road, Canterbury, Kent, CT1 3XE

THEME: ‘People we know’ – This will give us a chance to talk about our families, friends, people we work with and those we meet and know from our communities.

TRAINING: A free half day training and prep session is run by Jo Gawn (lead therapist at Symbol Connect UK) on 27th August at the same venue.

This is an excellent opportunity for people:

  • Studying/looking to study in the areas of therapies/teaching/inclusion
  • Working with children/young people with SEN and want to further their understanding and access an amazing CPD opportunity
  • Those who are confident working with children/young people and would like to help our community

Fundraising and Course Assistants

We are looking for people who can spare the occasional day to help us at events and courses. They would help us with the behind the scenes jobs like tea breaks, lunches, set up, tidy up and any other roles that crop up through the day. This frees up staff to work directly with the children and young people or allow us more time for fundraising and forward planning. It all makes such a difference.

Whichever role you choose, volunteering with 21 Together promises to be a fun and rewarding experience. A time to meet new friends and develop great new skills. We also love a good knees up with the whole team! Community is everything to us and as a volunteer you would be at the very heart of our community.
If you are interested please email us at info@21together.org.uk with a short CV or list of experience along with the roles you are interested in.
